From the Golden age of British radio no other character is better remembered than that of Dick Barton Special Agent. So a documentary broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on July 15th, Dick Barton – a Very Special Agent revealing the shows origins and history was a welcome treat.

Alexander Armstrong, who would make a wonderful Barton, should the programme ever be revived, presented this informative and entertaining documentary. The documentary in turn featured archive interviews with many associated with the series including Noel Johnson, Alex McCrindle, John Mann, Neil Tuson and Thora Hird, and self-confessed Barton fan, Joan Collins.

Dick Barton's Radio Beginnings

Captain Richard Barton, formerly of the commandos, kept 15 million listeners entranced when Dick Barton – Special Agent was originally broadcast back on the BBC Light Programme between 1946 and 1951. Every weeknight at 6.45pm, Dick along with his friends Jock and Snowy fought off an army of Nazi spies, mad professors, plagues of rats and exploding bombs.
