Broadcast Electric Field Radio Station Strength

From 1911 to 1919, the Massey Foundation, under the direction of Vincent Massey, constructed Hart House, a multi-purpose student centre – a gift to the University of Toronto. Designed to accommodate intellectual, cultural, and recreational functions, it contains a great variety of facilities including the Hart House Theatre located under the centre’s quadrangle.

Hart House Theatre – The Early Years

The theatre, which was not part of the Foundation’s gift, operated separately from 1919 until it was donated to the university in 1945. Serving the university and community at large, the 454-seat Hart House Theatre, frequently referred to as ‘the cradle of Canadian theatre’, introduced Europe’s Little Theatre movement in Canada.

The Arts and Letters Players’ experimental and innovative productions led to that company’s leader Roy Mitchell becoming the theatre’s first director. Many outstanding performers, playwrights, directors, and designers started their careers in the theatre.
