The Mercedes C-Class used to be the executive car of choice, favored by thrusting executives dashing between Powerpoint presentations. Recently, the high-fliers have swapped their beloved Mercs for other German alternatives. Now, time-pressured execs can be found tailgating others on the expressways in their BMW 3-Series or Audi A4 instead.

The Mercedes C-Class has swelled slightly with age and has become more mellow, more passive and more human as a result. The expensive AMG models still wear the aggressive body-kits and Bling, but the base C-Class is a pleasantly rounded and inoffensive carriage.

There is an old-fashioned honesty to this car which belies the raft of cutting-edge safety equipment, but the basic C-Class has never been particularly gadget-laden. Software engineers fresh from university with lots of Daddy's money may crawl off to more flashy alternatives, but for most normal people at least, the level of technology seen in this entry level Benz is quite enough. Reassuringly, it centers mainly on refinement, economy and safety.
