In a pre-dawn raid on 9 September 2010, U.S. Marines boarded and seized the German-owned container ship Magellan Star in the Gulf of Aden after it had been attacked and boarded by pirates a day earlier, the U.S. Fifth Fleet said in a statement.
A group of 24 marines, operating within a 25-nation coalition of naval forces to combat piracy along the north-east coast of Africa, regained control of the vessel from the pirates.
The Marines returned control of the ship, which flies the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, to the crew of 11, and no casualties or injuries were reported during the operation, the U.S. Navy said.
This was the first time that U.S. Marines had seized a pirated vessel off Somalia, according to Lt John Fage, of the US Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, BBC News reported.
Nine suspected pirates were taken into custody. Their fate has "yet to be determined", Lt Fage said.
The Marines launched their assault from aboard the USS Dubuque, after the Turkish frigate TCG Gokceada responded to a distress call from the Magellan Star, which was sailing from Bilbao in Spain to Singapore.
The U.S. troops were operating under a group called Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151), one of three task forces with a mandate to "deter, disrupt, and suppress piracy" in the region, the Fifth Fleet statement noted.
