Born during the depths of America’s worst economic calamity and raised in post-war America, Elvis Presley grew up as an only child in a family that was poor and often struggled to get by.

With his father often away from home his mother became the guiding influence in his life. She helped nurture his natural musical gifts for singing and guitar playing which were strongly influenced by the rhythm and blues music Elvis heard while growing up in the South.

Elvis’ Parents

Elvis’ father, Vernon Presley, was a man of limited formal education who eked out a living during the Depression by taking various part-time and laborer jobs when he could find them. Vernon met Elvis’ mother, Gladys Smith, when he was 17 and she was 21. Gladys earned a living as a seamstress, occasionally doing work for large clothing companies.
